Rainforest Alliance bean now in traditional blends

La Casa del Caffe includes Rainforest Alliance Certified beans in their traditional blends substantially increasing their sustainable coffee bean buy.

La Casa del Caffe, home of superior coffee blends, now mixes Rainforest Alliance Certified beans into their traditional blends including Italian, French and their signature blend, Tropicana, substantially increasing their overall sustainable coffee green bean buy.  These do not replace the specialty Rainforest Blend which contains 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified beans.

La Casa started roasting Rainforest Alliance Certified beans in 2004 in a specialty blend appropriately named Rainforest Blend.  Due to its popularity and the superior quality of the Rainforest Alliance beans, La Casa is now using certified Brazilian and Costa Rican beans in its traditional blends.  This is exciting news for their customers but most importantly for the Rainforests it protects.  The Brazilian Rainforest, Daterra, is within a biodiversity hot spot, the Cerrado, which is the most extensive woodland/savannah region in South America, and nearly as diverse and as threatened as the Amazon Rainforest.  Costa Rica hosts an amazing wealth of biodiversity.  An estimated four percent of the world's species can be found within its borders.  With more than 200 mammal species, 214 reptiles, 130 fish, 168 amphibians, 600 birds and over 12,000 different plant species, Costa Rica is a biodiversity mecca.

"We intend on becoming a significant buyer of Rainforest Alliance Certified beans in Australia " said Don Kennedy owner of La Casa del Caffe.  In fact, late last year La Casa was buying only 60-100kg per month of Rainforest Alliance Certified green beans, now we buy 2000kg per month and will increase this buy further."

The blends which contain the Rainforest Alliance Certified beans can be purchased directly from La Casa del Caffe, through the web www.lacasadelcaffe.com.au or at many of the cafes and restaurants serving La Casa del Caffe coffee.

Over the years, La Casa del Caffe has embarked upon a strategy focused on sustainable coffee, this includes adopting the Cachalu Biological Reserve in Columbia with donations resulting in the protection of 12.5 acres / 544,500 sq. feet of Cachalu's precious rainforest, its amazing wildlife and the communities who work within it; the introduction of eco friendly coffees and the investment in cloth delivery bags replacing plastic.

"We are a family run coffee roaster with strong values and hopes for a better future for our children, their children and so on" Don concluded.

La Casa - Helps protect acres of rainforest

SYDNEY, 23 September, This year at The Rocks Aroma Festival La Casa del Caffe, the home of superior coffee, featured its Rainforest Blend and donated all the profits made on the day to its adopted rainforest, Cachalu Biological Reserve in Columbia. This donation has resulted in the protection of 12.5 acres/544,500 sq. feet of Cachalu’s precious rainforest, its amazing wildlife and the communities who work within it.

Cachalu Biological Reserve is 1,800 acres of forest mainly comprised of majestic, ancient oak trees – was created to protect the Andean forest from the devastating damage caused by slash-and-burn agriculture techniques, and is a last refuge for many of these species, found nowhere else on earth. This small but invaluable reserve forms an important part of the biological corridor that runs along the Andes, in one of the most populous areas of Colombia.

“The generous support of the Aroma Festival 2004 patrons and the La Casa del Caffe staff who donated their days pay for the cause made this possible. Our on going support will be achieved through frequent purchases of the Rainforest Alliance certified green beans to produce our Rainforest Blend. In addition, we will continue to apply our sustainable coffee strategy in all parts of our business including steady coffee prices and the elimination of plastic delivery bags. We will continue to strive to make a difference.” said Don Kennedy owner of La Casa del Caffe.

The La Casa del Caffe Rainforest blend is a blend of Brazilian Daterra Rainforest and Costa Rican Rainforest arabica coffees beans certified by The Rainforest Alliance and is quickly becoming high on our consumer wish list. Fresh roasted, direct from the roaster, beans or ground to choice can be purchased through www.lacasadelcaffe.com.au

Our mission is to continue to roast sustainable coffee options and to encourage our customers to serve it in an effort to encourage consumer demand. We offer the Rainforest and Organic blends as part of our sustainable coffee range.

La Casa - Introduces Cloth Bags

La Casa del Caffe, the home of superior coffee blends, has replaced the use of plastic bags with reusable calico cloth bags for the purpose of delivering coffee to its customer base of cafés, restaurants, clubs andhotels.

According to the federal government 6.9 billion plastic bags are used every year in Australiaand up to 80 million of these end up as litter.  The litter is the issue because the bags get caught in our water ways and bush lands causing harm to our marine and wildlife.

La Casa del Caffe alone would use more than 20,000 plastic bags per year most of which would end up being thrown out.  That’s only 0.025% of the 80 million.  It’s a small contribution but every little bit counts.

“We’ve made this changebecause we were horrified by these statistics, and hope that our small effort can make a difference.  Unlike the major retailers we can’t expect our customers to pay for the cloth bags, but we can ask for their cooperation in exchanging the cloth bags upon receiving subsequent deliveries.”  Said La Casa del Caffe.

Over the years, La Casa del Caffe has embarked upon a strategy focused on sustainable coffee.  This includes not raising its coffee prices in over 4 years, the introduction of eco friendly coffees and the investment in cloth bags.  We will continue to strive to make a difference.

This announcement follows recent releases also supporting La Casa del Caffe’ssocial, environmental and economic sustainability businessstrategy.  This includes our Rainforest Blend produced from a blend of Brazilian Daterra Rainforest and Costa Rican Rainforest arabica coffees beans certified by The Rainforest Alliance
